Is Starbucks Coffee Organic? (TRUTH Revealed!)

Drinking Starbucks coffee is a daily routine for many coffee lovers. But drinking coffee that is loaded with pesticides might not fare well and can present numerous health problems over time. Organic coffee is a better alternative but does Starbucks give you that option? Let’s find out.

Is Starbucks Coffee Organic? Starbucks coffee is not organic. The use of non-organic milk and coffee beans that are not organic-certified makes its coffee non-organic. Having said that, Starbucks does sell organic coffee bean varieties as well. This choice is handy for those who want organic Starbucks coffee at home.

Is Starbucks Coffee Full of Pesticides?

Starbucks coffee is not free from pesticides but it is not to say that it overloads its coffee with the same. The global coffee giant is one of the biggest coffee purchasers in the world and it gets its coffee through ethical sourcing. But it does not have any control over the pesticide amounts used by the local farmers.

While the coffee is not loaded with pesticides, Starbucks does not have any control over the number of pesticides used in overseas coffee farms.

If you’re concerned about the number of pesticides in your cuppa joe, then avoiding Starbucks coffee would be a step in the right direction. Again, no one has the data on how much pesticide is used. But hey, it is better to safe than sorry.

Starbucks does offer its own lineup of organic coffee that are much better options. More on that later.

How True Is Starbucks’ Ethical Sourcing?

Whether it is Arabica or Robusta coffee bean, Starbucks talks a lot about sourcing beans the ethical way.

According to its 2020 Global Impact Report, 98.6% of the coffee is ethically sourced according to C.A.F.E practices.

When we take a look at the C.A.F.E practices Generic Evaluation Guidelines, it is clear that these guidelines are not as strict as the ones in Fair Trade.

Fairtrade coffee has to go through a lot of hoops to get the stamp of fair trade.

For example, the buyer of coffee has to pay $1.20 per pound of coffee and $1.40 per pound of organic coffee according to fair trade guidelines.

While Starbucks seems to pay this amount, it doesn’t do it directly to the farmers who cultivate the crops. Instead, middlemen are involved who gets a share of the price paid (roughly $0.4). This means the farmer gets only $0.80 per pound of coffee as opposed to $1.20.

This is one of the main reasons why even Starbucks’ claim of ethical sourcing of coffee goes under the hammer now and then.

Is It Okay For Me To Drink Starbucks Coffee?

As a coffee drinker, that choice is totally up to you.

Is Starbucks coffee organic?

Whether you’re going for a specialty coffee or an instant coffee, your cup of joe is not going to be 100% organic.

Both Arabica beans and Robusta beans procured by Starbucks are not organic. The coffee brand also uses milk that is non-organic as well.

If you can’t wrap your head around these two main factors, then it might be a good idea to make your own coffee with organic coffee beans and organic milk.

This is not to say that you will never get organic coffee at Starbucks. There are exemptions and discussed below.
